I wrote the spec for the Projectmix I/O while I was a Product Manager for M-Audio just before they were acquired by AVID.

The idea was to use the audio interface features of the FW-1814 and combine them with a professional control surface.

We worked with the late Bob Tudor and SaneWave for the Control surface functions. There were two important things I wanted to achieve with the control surface features:

1. We would only provide controls that actually made working with a DAW easier. If it was easier to use a mouse or quick-key commands for a function, we didn't provide a control for that function.

2. We would provide a "MIDI mode". With the touch of a button the user would switch from the standard control surface features to a MIDI mode that allowed them to control any other MIDI devices parameters. We provided a very simple, visual application for Mac/Windows that allowed the user to set a MIDI channel and CC value for every button and fader. (See screen shot on the left.)

This product was VERY successful and was on the market for many years.
